Choose the Right 12V Battery for Your Trail Camera

This trail camera battery box is designed to work with a compatible 12V battery, giving you the flexibility to choose the battery capacity and chemistry that best fits your setup and budget.

For most trail camera applications, we recommend a 12V LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery. Compared with traditional sealed lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 batteries are lighter, offer excellent cycle life, and maintain a more consistent voltage throughout their discharge.

Why We Recommend LiFePO4

Longer-lasting power: A properly sized 12V LiFePO4 battery can provide substantially more usable power than the internal AA batteries used by many trail cameras.

Longer service life: Quality LiFePO4 batteries are designed for many charge and discharge cycles, making them a great long term investment for trail cameras that spend months in the field.

Built-in battery protection: Many quality LiFePO4 batteries include a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) that helps protect the battery from conditions such as over-discharge, over-charge, over-current, and short circuits.

What About Sealed Lead-Acid Batteries?

Sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries have been a popular choice for trail cameras and other outdoor equipment for years. They’re inexpensive and readily available, but they are heavier and generally have a shorter cycle life than LiFePO4 batteries.

Cold temperatures can also significantly reduce the available capacity of lead-acid batteries. For trail cameras operating through long, cold winters, a quality LiFePO4 battery is often a better choice.

Recommended 12v LiFePO4 Battery

Looking for a 12v battery to use in this box? Most batteries in the 7ah to 15ah range will fit inside our weatherproof battery box, these are extremely common for fish finders and trail camera batteries. Any battery in this size with the “tab” style F2 terminals will work with our battery box and armored cord hookups. We highly recommend using LiFePO4 lithium batteries but you can certainly use sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries as well. This particular battery is one we have been using in our own battery boxes to power our WiseEye cellular cameras, they have all the built in BMS protections and are very affordable for a LiFePO4 battery – 12v 10ah LiFePO4 Battery

Don’t Forget the Charger

Lithium LiFePO4 batteries require the proper lithium battery charger for best results. If you decide to purchase a LiFePO4 battery you will need a LiFePO4 lithium charger, you may want to consider adding our recommended lithium charger if you don’t have one yet. – LiFePO4 Lithium Battery Charger

Works Where Solar Struggles

Running cameras in timber or low light areas? Solar might work there, but a 12v battery setup definitely will.

This is a solid alternative to solar panels when you’re not getting enough sun to stay charged. I love solar where there’s sunlight but those spots in the timber with questionable sunlight get a 12v battery setup on my property.

Making it a great option for both brands of cell cameras.

Simple Setup and Easy Transport

It doesn’t get much simpler than a 12v battery setup.

Charge up the battery, take it to the woods and set the box at the base of the tree, plug it into the camera and you’re good to go.

Carrying our 12v Battery box it pretty easy too with a built in carry handle.

The armored cord wraps up nice and neat around the box and the entire package can easily fit in a backpack for the walk in (especially if you’re carrying a few of them).
