Another popular option for external batteries for trail cameras is the “sealed lead acid” 12v batteries that used to be extremely popular for trail cameras and fish locators. The problem with sealed lead acid batteries is their cold weather performance and longevity. Frigid cold temps cause voltage to drop rapidly and sealed lead acid batteries don’t have a BMS system to shut off the battery before it drains too low in cold weather, which damages the battery and shortens its life considerably.

Our 12v LiFePO4 battery has a built in BMS which will shut the battery off at 10v before it drains too low and damages it. Even in frigid cold temps the Lithium Ion Phosphate Battery keeps the juice flowing consistently until it’s about to die, unlike the sealed lead acid batteries which slowly drain their voltage and damage themselves in the cold.

Works Where Solar Struggles

Running cameras in timber or low light areas? Solar might work there, but a 12v battery setup definitely will.

This is a solid alternative to solar panels when you’re not getting enough sun to stay charged. I love solar where there’s sunlight but those spots in the timber with questionable sunlight get a 12v battery setup on my property.
