Are Your Food Plots Getting Destroyed?!?!

Have you ever planted a plot only to have it destroyed well before prime time hunting?

I have...

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from planting food plots over the years is paying attention to my surroundings…

Plot sizes, deer densities, plant types, cover/browse, and neighboring food all play a role in whether your food plots will still be producing when you need them most…

A great example of this is on a property I’ve owned for the last 6 years…

My #1 favorite food plot crop to plant is soybeans…

However there’s been years where they would get completely destroyed by heavy browsing pressure well before the season…

Yet in other years they produced a bumper crop of loaded pods lasting well past the last day of late bow season…

What was the big difference in those years???

Neighboring food…

In the years where my farmer neighbor had soybeans my plots did amazing!

When he didn’t it meant utter destruction for my beans…

What the neighbors beans did was take the summer browsing pressure off my plot and that’s all it needed to make and maintain food through the deer deason even though the farmers beans were harvested months before seasons end.

So what do I do now??

I wait (or ask) what the neighbor will be planting this spring and then adjust my plotting plan based on that…

When he plants beans, I plant beans…

When he plants corn or alfalfa close to my property I plant brassicas and cereal grains…

It works to perfection!

It may sound counter intuitive to plant the same thing as the neighbor because we’re told to give deer the “missing link” in the area…

But if you try to be different without having an abundance of plotting acreage to handle the browsing pressure you might just be sitting in a deer desert come prime time…
